Paula Deen “Cake” ice cream cones are an easy dessert made with boxed cake mix, eggs and flat-bottomed cones, ready in 20 minutes plus cooling. It's a fun kid-friendly treat for birthday parties, cookouts or potluck tables, and it all bakes right in a muffin tin.
Fill each cone only halfway with batter, because the cake rises as it bakes. Overfill them and the batter spills over the rim and bakes into a sticky crust.
Paula bakes the batter right inside the cones, so you get a handheld cupcake with no paper liners. The cones also stay crisp enough to hold the frosting, which makes these easy to carry to a party.

FAQs
Can I use any flavor of cake mix?
Yes, any boxed cake mix works, so pick whatever flavor your crowd likes. Yellow, chocolate and funfetti all bake the same way in the cones.
Why do the cones need to be flat-bottomed?
Flat-bottomed cones sit upright in a muffin tin or on a cookie sheet without tipping over. Pointed cones would fall over and spill the batter.
How long do the cake cones keep once they're frosted?
The cones soften over time as the cake and frosting sit against them, so these taste best the day you make them. If you need to prep ahead, bake the cakes and add the frosting just before serving.
Can I make them ahead for a party?
You can bake the filled cones a few hours ahead and let them cool completely. Frost them right before serving so the cones stay crisp.
What's the most common mistake with these?
Overfilling the cones is the big one, since the batter rises as it bakes. Stick to filling each cone half full so nothing spills over the top.
